The Course Journey
Across six structured weeks, participants move from the foundations of effective research writing to a completed capstone portfolio. Each week contains five guided 60-minute sessions, practical writing exercises and a clear applied output.
Week 1 | Build Strong Research-Writing Foundations
Days 1–5
The course begins by showing learners what academic, scientific and medical writing share—and where their purposes, structures and readers differ. Participants learn to decode a writing brief, narrow a research topic, develop a central claim and build paragraphs that move logically from evidence to analysis.
What learners will cover
- Academic, scientific and medical writing compared
- Audience, purpose, genre and scope
- Research problems, questions, objectives and claims
- Paragraph structure, coherence and transitions
- Clarity, concision, precision and scholarly voice
Weekly output: A polished 450–600-word explanation of a research problem, supported by a short reflection on the revisions made.

Week 2 | Read Critically and Write with Evidence
Days 6–10
Learners move beyond collecting quotations and summarising papers. They develop a transparent approach to finding sources, evaluating evidence, paraphrasing accurately and synthesising several studies into a critical academic argument.
What learners will cover
- Searching for and organising credible evidence
- Critical reading and source evaluation
- Paraphrasing, summarising and citation boundaries
- Thematic synthesis and critical argument
- Structuring academic papers, literature reviews and proposals
Weekly output: A 700–900-word critical mini-review using four to six credible sources.

Week 3 | Turn Research into a Scientific Manuscript
Days 11–15
This week introduces the logic of the scientific paper. Learners follow a research question through the IMRaD structure and practise writing the sections that allow readers to understand what was studied, how it was studied and what was found.
What learners will cover
- The scientific story and IMRaD structure
- Informative titles, keywords and abstracts
- Introductions built around context, gap and rationale
- Transparent and reproducible methods
- Accurate results, tables, figures and captions
Weekly output: A working scientific-manuscript set containing a title, abstract, introduction, methods excerpt and results display.

Week 4 | Interpret Findings and Enter the Medical-Writing Landscape
Days 16–20
Learners complete the scientific manuscript by interpreting findings responsibly, then examine how medical writing changes across scholarly, clinical and introductory regulatory contexts. Particular attention is given to reporting completeness, risk, uncertainty and traceability.
What learners will cover
- Discussion sections, limitations and proportionate conclusions
- Medical-writing documents, readers and consequences of error
- Health-research reporting guidelines through EQUATOR
- Benefits, harms, uncertainty and causal language
- Clinical and regulatory documents: an applied introduction
Weekly output: A completed scientific writing package and a one-page clinical or evidence synopsis with a traceability check.

Week 5 | Communicate Medical Evidence and Prepare for Publication
Days 21–25
The fifth week connects reader-centred medical communication with the responsibilities of scholarly publication. Learners translate technical evidence for patients and the public, then address referencing, authorship, research integrity, responsible AI use and final quality assurance.
What learners will cover
- Plain-language medical writing and health literacy
- Citation systems, reference management and permissions
- Publication ethics, authorship and conflicts of interest
- Responsible use and disclosure of generative AI
- Editing, quality assurance and submission preparation
Weekly output: A professional evidence summary, a patient/public version of the same evidence and an editorial quality-assurance memo.

Week 6 | Develop and Present a Capstone Writing Portfolio
Days 26–30
The final week is a guided writing studio. Learners choose an academic, scientific or medical track, develop a complete draft, exchange structured feedback, revise strategically and present the reasoning behind their final writing decisions.
What learners will cover
- Selecting a capstone track and defining the brief
- Drafting from a functional outline
- Giving and using actionable peer feedback
- Revision, quality control and submission documents
- Capstone showcase and continuing-development plan
Weekly output: A track-specific capstone accompanied by a quality checklist, peer-review record and reflective portfolio.
